WEEKEND REVIEW - 28th/29th MAY

Paul Middlemiss31 May 2022 - 13:59

3s keep up 100% record, while 1st XI miss out in derby

The 3rd XI opened up a gap at the top of the Premier Division table as they overcame previously unbeaten Wanstead and Snaresbrook with a commanding performance at Coopers.  In form Ollie White was in the runs again, his 94 included 13 fours and 3 sixes, and there were also fluent half centuries from captain Dan Simpson, Arun Kullar and Rohan Mayor.  The visiting attack had no answer to the Upminster batsmen, and despite a fine spell from Tom Wright, Upminster piled up 321-4 from their 45 overs.  Rod Martin (53) and Bilal Dar got the Wanstead reply off to a good start, but with the run rate always climbing wickets fell at regular intervals.  Shoab Iqbal made 54, but three wickets from Mark D'Cruz and two for Mayor saw Wanstead bowled out for 201.

There was a second consecutive defeat for the 1st XI as they lost out in their Division One contest at nearby Harold Wood.  Upminster fell to 50-3 as they batted first at Harold Wood Park, but James Evans continued his excellent form and steadied the ship alongside Nehal Butt.  Butt fell for 42 but Evans brought up another half century before eventually being dismissed for 81.  Captain Alan Ison took over from Evans and led the Upminster charge towards a big score.  He struck 9 fours and 2 sixes in a 73 ball innings of 83, and with support from Tom Daniels and Harry Jenkins this all meant Upminster closed on 298-7.  That looked like it would be a big chase for Wood, but Dhruv Talati and Taqi Abbas got the home side's chase off to a fast start.  Both men passed fifty at quicker than a run a ball and they did not stop there.  They went on to put on 198 for the first wicket in 30 overs, before Talati was dismissed for 86 by Ellis Pickering.  Abbas soon brought up three figures, before being dismissed by Pickering, but Muhammed Zareef made a rapid 53 from 33 balls to take the game away from Upminster.  Pickering also dismissed Zareef, to finish with figures of 3-61, but Wood got home with four wickets and seven overs to spare.

The 2nd XI bounced back from their first defeat in three years last week, as they beat their Wood counterparts by six wickets.  Wood batted first on a belter of a track at Upminster Park, and Craig Sampson and Kamran Khan enjoyed the conditions as they made 69 and 80 respectively.  Captain Nicky Ison dismissed both men, but a late flurry from Richard Brabner helped Wood lift their total to 272-7.  Aki Rahman fell early in the Upminster reply, but Josh Lamont and Ehsan Afzal went on the attack.  Afzal was bowled for 49 but captain Ison joined Lamont and continued the fight.  Lamont was striking the ball sweetly as he passed 50, but two quick wickets at the other end gave Wood a sniff.  The experienced Terry Wyatt then combined with Lamont to move Upminster towards victory.  Lamont continued to find the boundary with regularity and soon bought up his first ton of the season, while Wyatt reached a half century of his own.  A six wicket win was soon confirmed with more than 14 overs to spare, Lamont finishing unbeaten on 116 and Wyatt on 51 not out.

The 4th XI fell to defeat at Oakfield Parkonians 3s.  Paul Middlemiss made 60 for Upminster, but they fell from 90-3 to 105-7.  Nathan Brown and Rob White steadily began to rebuild before launching a late assault on a tiring Parkonians attack.  Brown ended 48 not out while the experienced White finished on 49 not out as Upminster reached 211-7.  Ian Munn's side would have hoped that would be a challenging chase for their opponents, but Chetan Patel and Krishan Dilipkumar capitalised on some slack bowling and fielding to put Parks in control.  The home side had a wobble of their own, with captain Munn picking up three wickets, but Luke Coates kept his calm, and his 51 not out took Parks to  a four wicket win.

There was a third win of the season for the 5th XI as they beat AGHAB 3s at Campion.  Shrey Shah was the pick of the Upminster attack with four wickets, while Ryan Oakes' brace also helped to dismiss AGHAB for 166.  Upminster lost wickets at regular intervals during the chase, but a marvellous knock from opener Matthew Ingleson helped the home side to a four wicket win.

The 6th XI lost out at Harold Wood 5s despite some excellent individual performances from the youngsters in the side.  Harry Lawes (41) and Oliver Ward (82) put on 115 for the second wicket, but when they were dismissed the innings fell away with Harry Coles the only other batter to make double figures.  Tom Young impressed with the ball and picked up an early wicket for Upminster, but Andrew Polling (57*) and Albab Choudhury (89) helped Wood to a comfortable eight wicket win.

Sunday saw Old Cooperians RFC visit for the Scott Sarson Memorial Match.  There were runs for Oliver White (again) and Nathan Brown, and three wickets for captain Dave Brown, but the result was not important on a day such as this, and everyone involved should be congratulated on an excellent afternoon.
