It was a quite remarkable weekend for the club's senior sides, with eight wins gained from the nine league games played, and some brilliant individual performances along the way.
Leading the way on Saturday were the 1st XI, who kept up their good form with what turned out to be a pretty comfortable win over Gidea Park and Romford at Upminster Park. Pulkit Gupta and Mo Ahmad both got starts once again, and JJ Smuts and Jeevan Singh looked in good touch as Upminster reached 126-2. At that stage the home team may have been looking at a score in excess of 300, but Singh's departure saw the run rate drop as Upminster fell to 167-5. Smuts remained at the crease though and soon brought up another magnificent hundred as Gupta's side moved towards a challenging total. The former South African international was eighth out for a brilliant 159 (from just 104 balls) and Upminster were eventually bowled out for 261, with more than four overs of their innings not used. The promotion chasers may have been worried they had not got as many runs as they should have done, but Nehal Butt soon eased any nerves with a brilliant opening burst which reduced the visitors to 31-3. Lakshan Rodrigo and Mahmad Alikhail dug in to try and repair the damage for Park, but when they fell Smuts and Singh began to work their way through the middle order with the help of Jamie Green and Shafiq Rahman. Ben Little and former Upminster man Will Chuter showed some resistance with a late flurry of boundaries, but Park were all out for 148 as Upminster stayed in the promotion race.
On Sunday, it was a case of anything one of our South African stars can do, the other can do too, as Sunette Viljoen-Louw signed off for the season with a quite remarkable innings for the Women's 1st XI against Colchester and East Essex. Viljoen-Louw struck an unbeaten 207 from just 114 balls, an innings which included 36 fours and three maximums. Georgia Hayes also made a patient 47 as Upminster piled up 343-6. Julia Hoal and Taylor Foster made a fast start to the Colchester reply, and were ahead of the run rate when Hoal fell for 76 at the end of the 14th over, but Zoe Quested's 2-25 put Upminster back in charge. Emily Eves then fought-back again for the home side, smashing 98 from 76 balls, however Colchester ended on 309-4 as Upminster won by 34 runs. The win means Upminster will end their debut season in the top-flight in second place in the table.
Back to Saturday, and the 2nd XI stayed on top of the Premier Division table with a win at Billericay. Opener Harry Jenkins made a brilliant 94 for Upminster, and Gus Siggins continued his excellent season with 51, as the title chasers looked to post a big total. John Curtis then showed his quality with the bat once again, making a brilliant 79 (and moving to 400 runs for the season in the process) before captain Ollie Peck struck some late blows to take the total to 336-8. Andrew Berry continued his excellent season with two early wickets as Ricay began their chase, but Stuart Hynes stood firm and got good support from Louis Hawes. Hynes made 68 and Hawes 58, but both men were removed by Peck as Upminster took control. Peck went on to claim 5-42, and although the home side's lower order showed some resistance and ensured they used all of their overs, they closed on 238-9 as Upminster won by 98 runs.
The 3rd XI's charge up the Premier Division table carried on with a comfortable win over Chelmsford at Coopers. Captain Dan Simpson continued his excellent second half of the summer with a composed innings of 75, and he received good support from Arun Kullar and Rob Mack. Upminster looked like they may be struggling to reach 200 for large parts of their innings, but a 22 ball blast that produced 38 runs from Ollie Burley fired them to a total of 230-9. Burley then teamed up with Tom Young to effectively end the game as a contest, as the two young seamers put Upminser in control. Young claimed a brilliant 4-50 and Burley 2-20 as Chelmsford fell to 72-7. The stage was then set for Sunette Viljoen-Louw to end her season with the 3rd XI in style, claiming the eighth and then final wickets to help bowl out the visitors for 121.
A brilliant and efficient team performance saw the 4th XI pick up a win against Oakfield Parkonians 3s. Parks looked in no trouble at all as they reached 43-0, but both openers were then removed by Finley Tolan, and from that point Upminster never looked back. Aedan Daly claimed 3-39 and Nathan Brown picked up 2-11 as the home side were bowled out for 148. Matt Ingleson and Matt Mccarthy then got stuck into the Parks bowling as Upminster sensed an early finish. Their partnership reached three figures and a ten wicket win looked on the horizon until Ingleson was removed for 67. Mccarthy though went on to the end, finishing on 68 not out, and with Ethan Berry for company, Upminster cruised home by nine wickets.
A remarkable fightback saw the 5th XI pick up a brilliant win against Fives and Heronians 4s. Yasir Ali Bhatti made 67 for Fives, and with a number of other double figure contributions to support him, his side were able to reach 193-7. Dylan Mansell (2-27) and Adam Overton (2-26) were the pick of the Upminster attack. Overton then made 26 in the Upminster reply, but when his team fell to 93-6, with more than a hundred still needed, the game looked very much up. However, Mansell and Avanish Ajmani hadn't read the script and slowly began to get Upminster back in the game. As the runs began to flow both batters grew in confidence and sensed an unlikely victory and Fives were forced to try a number of different bowlers to try and find a breakthrough. Mansell soon reached his half century as Upminster neared the finish line, and he was to end on 58 not out, with Ajmani on 43 not out, as they secured a famous four wicket win.
The only defeat of the weekend was at Campion where the 6th XI were unlucky to lose out against Harold Wood 5s. Thomas Cargill top scored for Upminster with 48, while there were also good contributions from Ian Twine, Will Court and Ben Calder as Upminster made a solid 192-6. Veteran Ian Jones claimed 2-35 for Wood. Wood looked to be on course for an easy win as they reached 81-1, but the dismissal of Idrees Hakeem for 50 opened up the game. Thomas Brabin picked up 2-23 as Upminster fought to the very end, but Wood edged home by three wickets with five balls to spare.
The Mid-Essex XI continued their brilliant recent form with a third consecutive win over Rayleigh 4s, Rayleigh opener Andy Scogings made 28, but the rest of the visitors' batters struggled against Upminster's well disciplined seven man attack. Joe Farrell (3-22) and Max Bird (2-5) led the way as Rayleigh were bowled out for 111 at Broxhill Road. Arron Applegate, Freddie Williams and Scott Fisher took Upminster to 84-1 before a flurry of wickets caused a few nerves. Farrell completed a good day's work though, as he and Lewis Munn saw Upminster to a five wicket win and a step nearer survival.
The Women's 2nd XI returned to action on Sunday and went to the top of Division Three with an seven wicket win at Galleywood. Lily Byford made 47 not out for Galleywood but two wickets each for Imogen Croker and Lauren Plumb, and a debut wicket for Jess Priestly, meant Upminster were left with a target of 122. Croker and Jami Armes got the Upminster reply off to an excellent start, and after they both fell Plumb completed an excellent afternoon with an unbeaten 46 to help steer her side home.
