Suni shines to keep women's side in hunt for title

A marvellous weekend for the club was capped on Sunday afternoon when the Women's 1st XI overcame Hutton by eight wickets to stay in the Premier Division title race. Hutton won the toss at the Polo Ground and decided to bat first on a warm afternoon. Sally Chapman and Amy Hills made a solid start for the home side, but after Chapman was run out Upminster took control as Hutton fell to 63-3. However, Hills remained at the crease and began to lead a Hutton fightback. Hills shared stands of 39 with Sophie Wilson and 51 with Georgie Manek, passing her half century on the way, to take Hutton towards a competitive score. The Hutton opener was eventually out for 89, but Manek struck some late boundaries to finish on 32 not out as the home team ended on 210-9. Paige Roche (2-27) and Bethan Libby (2-14) were the pick of the Upminster attack. Roche fell to Chapman early in the Upminster chase, but Sunette Viljoen and Georgia Hayes both looked in good touch and their second wicket partnership soon passed 50. Hayes had made 18 when she was dismissed, and at 87-2 the game was somewhat in the balance. However, Edie Ayliffe provided good support to Viljoen and they soon had Upminster back on top, with the South African opener bringing up her half century and looking in fine form. Viljoen moved through the gears as the Hutton attack began to tire in the heat and it wasn't long before she was bringing up three figures. Ayliffe was playing the perfect support role and began to find the boundary herself as Upminster closed in on victory, while Viljoen struck two maximums to take Upminster to the brink. It was all over in the 35th over with Ayliffe ending on 39 not out and Viljoen finishing on a brilliant 137 not out from 103 balls.

There were eight junior games played during the day with six wins picked up. The U12s put in an impressive all-round performance to beat Frenford by eight wickets in the Brian Taylor Trophy and move into the quarter finals. There was also a cup win for the U17s in the Central Cup, as they beat Shenfield by six wickets. There were also league wins for the U9 Ultras, the U10 Ultras, the U11 Ultras and the U13 Ultimates, and defeats for the U8 and U15 Ultras.

In Windmill Whack VIII two games took place on Sunday. In Game 1 the Mullis and Peake Monarchs saw off the Kushoom Bugh Tigers, before the Tigers recovered in Game 2 to see off reigning champions the Hunter Hurricanes.
