JJ goes big as first four sides all win

JJ Smuts produced a masterful all-round performance to help the 1st XI to a victory over Springfield, which keeps Upminster well and truly in the promotion race.  With regular skipper Pulkit Gupta unavailable, Smuts was in charge for the day and found himself at the crease earlier than he would have wished as Springfield decided to bowl first, and then picked up an early wicket.  Smuts and Mo Ahmad added 82 for the second wicket before Ahmad fell for 46, but Smuts passed 50 with Jeevan Singh with him for company.  Singh brought up his own half century at nearly a run a ball, and it wasn't long before Smuts reached his first ton of the season as Upminster took control.  The third wicket partnership had reached 119 when Singh fell for 61, but by now Smuts was in full flow and scoring freely all around the ground.  Indeed, the unbroken sixth wicket partnership between Smuts and Terry Wyatt was worth 51, with Wyatt facing only five balls, when Upminster declared early on 265-4.  Smuts ended on 148 not out from just 107 balls, an innings which included 14 fours and eight sixes.  Smuts may have been forgiven if he had given himself a break after his batting heroics, but instead he was straight into the attack and picking up an early wicket as Upminster pressed for victory.  Nehal Butt and Max Carter-Miller then struck to keep the home side on top, before Smuts (4-35) made the crucial breakthrough when he removed Frost for 40.  Smuts continued his good day as he ran through the Springfield middle order, and although Singh (45*) struck some late blows, a brace of wickets from Jamie Green saw Upminster to an 85 run win.

The 2nd XI stayed in the Premier Division title hunt with a solid performance to see off Shenfield at Chelmsford Road.  Andy Berry continued his recent good form with two early wickets, including that of former Upminster man Alfie James, and when the home side fell to 107-5 and then 138-7 an early finish looked like it may be on the cards.  However, a brilliant innings from Shenfield opener Theo Robinson kept his side in the game.  He made 121 from 118 balls before being ninth man out, another to be dismissed by Berry, as his side climbed to 219-9.  It was three old-stagers who took the bowling honours for Upminster, with Berry, Ollie Peck and John Curtis each picking up three wickets.  If it was the old-boys who had done the damage with the ball, then it was two younger faces who saw Upminster home with the bat.  A brilliant third wicket partnership of 126 between Tom Daniels and Gus Siggins (72) put Upminster in charge, and even after Siggins fell Upminster never looked like losing the game.  Daniels added further runs with Stu Connor, and after Connor's dismissal Curtis again showed his prowess with the bat with 32 not out.  Daniels ended on a brilliant unbeaten 85 as Upminster won by six wickets with more than four overs to spare.

The 3rd XI put in a brilliant performance to upset table topping West Essex and pick up a valuable win at Coopers.  Arun Kullar was the star of the show with the bat, making his second century of the season as Upminster piled up the runs on a warm afternoon.  Kullar received excellent support from Mit Shah, Sunette Viljoen and captain Dan Simpson as Upminster were able to declare three overs early on 303-8.  It was then over to a couple of 3rd XI legends to take Upminster to victory.  Mark D'Cruz claimed three wickets before Rob Mack continued his renaissance with the ball, picking up another five wicket haul as West were bowled out for 193 to give Upminster a convincing victory.

The earliest winners of the day were the 4th XI as they swept aside Hadleigh and Thundersley 3s.  Hadleigh's only win of the season had come against Ian Munn's side at Coopers back in May, but Munn's men were not about to let that happen again at the John Burrows Ground.  The home side actually made a good start with the bat reaching 22-0, but after Aedan Daly removed Spencer Young, Upminster never looked back.  Daly picked up 3-10 and Nathan Brown claimed 3-11 as Munn once again utilised all of his seven man attack.  Philip Gilbert made a gritty 27 from 102 balls, but after he was dismissed by Joseph Brooks the Hadleigh innings was quickly ended with just 93 on the board.  Upminster looked in a spot of bother themselves as they fell to 23-2, but Matt Ingleson and Matt Mccarthy soon got things back on track with a stand of 51.  Ingleson fell for 35 but Mccarthy and Brooks stayed calm and saw Upmister home by seven wickets.  The win saw Upminster climb to second place in the table.

There was a great game, but defeat, for the 5th XI against Woodford Green at Campion.  Stewart Hammond (42) and Michael Pedrick put on 91 for the first wicket, and after Hamond went Pedrick put together further good partnerships with Thomas Cargill and Gary Carr as Upminster moved towards a good total.  Pedrick eventually fell for 60, but Ollie Hinton and Adam Overton continued the good work of the top order.  Overton made a powerful 61 not out from 36 deliveries, and Dylan Mansell also struck some late blows as Upminster declared three overs early on 251-5.  If Upminster thought they were going to get things all their own way they were very much mistaken as Paleit (55) and Bryan (86) took Green into a good position at 161-1.  Both batters were dismissed by Kevin Roome, who also then picked up two further quick wickets to give Upminster hope, but an unbeaten 40 from Nathan Onojaife saw the visitors to a four wicket win.

A superb all-round performance from the 6th XI helped them to a crucial win over Chelmsford 5s.  The two sides started the day with just one point separating them, but Upminster's best showing of the season helped them to end the day with some daylight between them and the drop-zone.  Upminster's attack put in a disciplined effort with the ball, but some steady batting from Chelmsford saw them reach 198-7.  Upminster's batting has been fragile this season but a brilliant 75 from Kaleb Forster put them in charge.  It was then left to Patrick Gulvin to make his first senior league fifty, his marvellous unbeaten 51 seeing Upminster home by three wickets.

The Mid-Essex XI lost out against Division Nine high-fliers Danbury.  13 year old George Sheridan made a patient 26 at the top of the Upminster order, and there were good contributions from Joshua O'Sullivan, Mike Larke and skipper Craig Grote, but Upminster's total of 142 all out looked a little under par.  That proved to be the case as father and son combo Simon and Spencer Moore began the Danbury chase.  Simon fell for 24, dismissed by Chris Dann, but Spencer (48*) and Sampath (57*) saw Danbury to a nine wicket win.
