Both Upminster’s U11s and U13s claimed their respective Havering league titles last weekend with fine performances securing the crowns.
The U11s faced a well drilled Belhus team who had won the South Division to earn the right to take on Upminster Heat (who won the North Division). Upminster made a fast start to their innings, and although they lost wickets at regular intervals they were able to set a competitive total of 98-4 from their 12 overs. Two run outs early in the Belhus innings put Upminster on top, and although the middle-order helped to recover things, some disciplined bowling from Upminster saw them win by 38 runs and claim the title. Elsewhere in the U11 play-offs, Upminster Thunder lost out to Hornchurch Athletic to end in sixth position, Upminster Breeze received a concession to finish in seventh spot and Upminster Monsoon saw off Orsett and Thurrock to end in ninth position.
In the U13s final, Upminster Inferno (North Division winners) faced a Rainham side who had finished top of the pile in the South Division. Rainham won the toss and decided to bat first but lost two early wickets to run outs and never recovered. Upminster’s excellent fielding display backed up a disciplined bowling performance meaning Rainham were bowled out for 34. The Upminster openers wasted no time in their reply, taking their side to the title in just over five overs, without losing a wicket. Also in the U13 play-offs, Upminster Flash ended in third place after beating Gidea Park and Romford, while Upminster Cyclone ended in a brilliant fifth place with a win over Harold Wood.
With the league section of the season in the Havering competitions now completed, attention has begun to turn to the cup competitions, and our U9s Storm are already into the Grand Final after victories over Harold Wood and Rainham. They will face Orsett and Thurrock in the Final on 24th March. Meanwhile in the U9s competitions, Upminster Flood and Upminster Hurricane will now take part in the plate event.
In the U11s cup, three Upminster sides have made it through to the quarter-finals, with the Heat, Monsoon and Thunder all making the last eight. Those quarter-finals will take place this weekend with the Heat and Monsoon meeting one another for a place in the final four. Upminster Breeze will now move to take part in the plate event.
Three Upminster sides also remain in the U13 Cup with eight teams still involved in total, although two of those Upminster sides (Inferno and Flash) did receive a first round bye. Upminster Cyclone did though produce an excellent display to overcome Goresbrook and secure their quarter-final place. All of those quarter-finals take place this weekend.
In the U15 Cup, Upminster Tsunami overcame Upminster Blaze to take their place in the semi-finals. Tsunami will now take on Harold Wood in the last four of the cup, while Blaze will take on Hornchurch Athletic in the semi-finals of the plate.
