here were four wins, and lots of excellent personal performances as the senior league season closed for another year on Saturday.
At Upminster Park, an innings of a lifetime from Harry Jenkins set the 1st XI up to finish the season with a convincing win over Wickford. Club stalwart Jenkins had a previous high score for the club of 166, and a previous 1st XI best of 79. However, he put the Wickford bowlers to the sword with an astonishing innings of 200 from just 126 balls, a knock which included six maximums and 26 fours. It was the first double ton for the club since Lorne Sprigg’s 231 against West Essex, nearly 18 years to the day. Jenkins shared a third wicket stand of 227 with debutant Adam Wheater, who himself made a brilliant 124 from just 70 deliveries as the two men fired the home side towards a huge total. Pulkit Gupta had earlier completed a fine season with 78 from 64, and although no other Upminster batter reached double figures, Alan Ison’s side closed on 460-9. Wickford’s innings went in a very different direction with nine batters reaching double figures, but Billy Corps’ 77 being the top score. James Evans, Scott Fisher and Billy Wright all picked up two wickets each for Upminster, and Wickford closed on 311-9. Upminster ended the season in fourth place, Wickford in tenth.
Jordan Tolan’s first half century for the club helped the 2nd XI to a final day win over champions Wanstead and Snaresbrook at Overton Drive. Wanstead opener Hamza Shoaib made an excellent 103 for the champions, but wickets for the spin-twins Nicky Ison and Ant Limn pegged back the home team. There was also a wicket on his 2nd XI debut for youngster Stanley Moore, which meant Wanstead closed on 236-9. Mark D’Cruz and Stu Connor helped take Upminster to 74-1 before Tolan came to the crease and found the boundary with regularity. When he fell for 56 it looked like Upminster may miss out, but Callum Berry (36*) and Oliver White (21*) took Upminster to a two wicket win. Upminster ended the season as runners-up, and congratulations to Wanstead and Snaresbrook who ended as champions.
The 3rd XI also picked up a win over the champions, as they won at Harlow. Paul Middlemiss (30) and Dan Simpson (53) got the visitors off to a good start, but despite 29 from Mark Schofield they fell to 137-5. Nathan Brown played a mature knock, making an unbeaten 33 to ensure his side reached a competitive 203-9. Tyler Dobson claimed 4-26 for the home team. Harlow also made a good start to their innings, reaching 81-2 in 13 overs, but the introduction of Gus Siggins and Michael Jones into the attack turned the game Upminster’s way. Jones dismissed Harlow captain Rizwan Qayyum for 51 and although the champions were still favourites at that stage Siggins and Jones turned the screw. Mark Schofield finished things off with two wickets in two balls, and Dylan Mansell also claimed three wickets as Upminster ended the season with a fine win by 23 runs. Upminster ended the season in third place, and congratulations to Harlow who ended as champions.
A maiden ton from captain Ian Munn was not enough to stop the 4th XI losing out to Hornchurch 3s in the derby at Coopers. Urchins opener Mohammed Azian Zafar completed a remarkable season with an innings of 161 to help his side pile up a daunting total. Gary Barnacle and Ed Warren also made half centuries as Hornchurch reached 379-6. Tom Young was the pick of the Upminster attack with 2-56. Youngsters Mit Shah and Matt Ingleson got the Upminster reply off to an excellent start, and both batters went on to make their maiden half centuries at that level. However, they fell soon after one another, and when another two wickets fell quickly Upminster looked like they may collapse. Captain Munn had other ideas though, and along with Matt Burch they began to rebuild. Burch’s dismissal for 36 put paid to any hopes Upminster had of chasing down their target, but Munn went on to bring his century as his side ended on 291-8. Upminster ended the season in fifth, Hornchurch in sixth.
The 5th XI capped an excellent season with a win over Gidea Park and Romford 4th XI. The game was an excellent contest to end the season, with Park making 234-6 from their 40 overs, before Aalok Latey’s side chased down the target with two wickets and 11 balls to spare. Upminster ended the season as runners-up, Gidea Park ended in ninth.
An astonishing innings from Shenfield 4th XI batter Josh Kirby meant the 6th XI ended an excellent season with a loss. Kirby made 259 from just 110 balls, striking a remarkable 26 maximums in the process!! James MacCallum also made 78 as Shenfield piled up a staggering 429-8 in 40 overs. Ollie Burley (2-75), Harry Coles (2-81) and Michael Pedrick (3-60) emerged from the onslaught with some wickets to their names!! Upminster were never realistically in the game from that point, but six batters made double figures to ensure they batted out their overs. Captain Ray Calder made 46 as Upminster finished on a credible 205-8. Upminster ended an excellent season in fifth, Shenfield in second.
The Sunday Friendly XI lost out in an enjoyable game with Old Fallopians at Upminster Park. Fallopians batter Dubey made an unbeaten 116 to lead his team to 322-6. An early finish looked in store when Upminster slipped to 100-8, but a first senior 50 for Harry Bradford (74) and an excellent 48 not out from Ollie Burley helped Upminster to close on 231-9.
