HAMRO FOUNDATION ESSEX LEAGUE - WEEK 6 REVIEW

Tons of fun for Webster, Lamont and Burchell as the sun shines on Week Six

It was an afternoon of mixed results on Saturday as timed cricket returned, with two wins, two defeats and three draws for Upminster's senior sides.  There were however three centuries for the club's batters as the sun shone brightly once again.

Leading the way was Tasmanian star Beau Webster, who made his second consecutive league century, this time against high flying Belhus at North Stifford.  Webster and fellow opener Kiran Kullar put on a century for the opening wicket, but once Kullar fell for 35 the home side fought-back.  Webster continued to keep the scoreboard moving with a flurry of boundaries, and soon brought up three figures, but it was not until he was joined by the experienced Harry Jenkins that Upminster fully took control.  Webster passed the 150 mark with Jenkins still for company, before eventually falling for 172, from 147 deliveries.  Jenkins finished on 29 not out as the visitors closed on 295-7 from their 50 overs.

Gus Philpot and Joe Joyce took Belhus into a good position at 101-1, but when Shaff Rahman removed Philpot and then Matt Doran Upminster were back in the game.  Webster later removed Joyce and Jack Plom in quick succession, after both had made half centuries to give Upminster a sniff of victory, but Belhus comfortably held on for the draw at 226-7.

A hard-hitting innings of 117 off 90 balls from Josh Lamont, helped the home side to a huge score against reigning champions Wanstead and Snaresbrook at Upminster Park, before the game eventually ended in a draw.  Lamont put on 105 with Aki Rahman (41) and then 111 with captain Nicky Ison as Upminster took advantage of the conditions.  After Lamont's fine innings came to an end, captain Ison took things on, and was run out for 82 as his side moved towards 300.  Late runs from Terry Wyatt and Rob Healey meant Upminster closed on 328-7.  Pavan Patel (57), Salman Syed (106) and Rod Martin (81) put Wanstead into a brilliant position to win the game, but Ison capped an excellent individual performance by taking 4-77 to peg back the visitors as they finished on 289-5.

The third century of the day came at Campion as James Burchell's unbeaten 105 took the 6th XI to a much needed victory.  Burchell, who only started playing regularly last season, struck 17 boundaries in his 120 ball knock, and along with youngster Thomas Brabin (69 from 66), Adnan Malik (21) and Ollie Clarke (24*) helped Upminster to post a formidable 278-5.  If Burchell had been the star with the bat, then youngster Stan Moore became the star of day with the ball.  Moore took 5-14 from his six overs to take his side to the brink of victory, and although Shaun Gillion made 65 for Ricay they were bowled out for 130 to give Ray Calder's side the win.

There was another win, a fourth in succession, for the 3rd XI as they cruised past Ilford at Forest Road.  Andrew Berry and Max Carter-Miller did the early damage for Dan Simpson's men, and although opener Adam Ali made a defiant 30, Sam Twine and Ant Limn picked up two wickets apiece at the end of the innings to help roll out Ilford for 80.  Opening pair Simpson and Steve Limn did the majority of the work in the chase as they put on a half century for the first wicket, and despite both falling before the end Upminster coasted to a seven wicket win.

A youthful 4th XI put in an excellent performance at Coopers School against Brentwood 3s, with the contest eventually ending in a draw.  Paul Middlemiss (38) and Will Frost (42) put on 95 for the opening wicket, but despite 35 from captain Ian Munn, Upminster then fell to 168-8.  Joshan Narbheram and Fenton Everingham then put together the most crucial stand of the day as their ninth wicket partnership of 49 helped Upminster to a total of 225-9. Brentwood looked in control as they moved to 102-1, but two wickets in an over from Everingham got Upminster back in the game before Nathan Brown started to work his way through the middle order.  Brown took 4-62 to take a Brentwood win out of the equation, but the visitors reached the last over at 190-7.  Ryan Oakes then took two wickets in four balls to raise hopes of an unlikely win, but Brentwood closed on 195-9.

The 5th XI lost out in a tight contest at Walthamstow 4s.  Stewart Hammond and Matt Burch made solid contributions at the top of the order, but it was Harry King (51* from 39) who added some much needed impetus to the innings and helped Upminster to 175.  Stow slipped to 61-5 in reply, with Ryan Brown doing most of the damage, but an unbeaten 74 from skipper Gayan Harendra helped the home team to a four wicket win.

There was a friendly defeat for the 7th XI, as they lost out to Kings Langley.  Langley were stuck in traffic on the M25 meaning the game was reduced to 30 overs per side, but Jack Middleton (69*) and Mukhtar Shah (100*) made up for lost time with a stand of 199 as the visitors reached 232-2.  While Upminster never looked like reaching their target, the young side showed plenty of fight.  Youngsters Isaac Horsley, Zach Lawes, Kai Bannister and Oliver Hinton all applied themselves superbly, while captain Matt Malby top scored with 31 as Upminster made 162-9.

The Sunday Friendly XI lost out in an excellent game at Rettendon.  Chris Sutherby top scored for the home team with 52 as they made 214-6 from 35 overs.  Ryan Oakes (35), Ryan Brown (43*) and Dave Brown (48*) all batted well for Upminster, but they fell short, finishing on 171-5.
